Quilting
For Beginners Only
And I Mean It!!!
So you want to quilt. You are between 30-84 years old and secretly buy fabric, and quilting books. You lust after the quilts you see your friends making. But...if your last sewing class (if you have had one) was back when dinosaurs ruled the world, you may be ready FOR BEGINNERS ONLY. One day, when you got the courage, you went out of town, using an alias, to take your first quilting class. You were ready. After the first hour of your "class" you realized you were definitely in the wrong pew. The teacher was using words like tension, bias, counter clockwise, contrast, value, hue and binding. It seemed that everyone in the class was on page forty-four and you were lost in the forest. The next week you called in sick with a medical emergency, (SUDDEN CASE OF THE DUMMIES) and you never came back. You wiped the tears of frustration from your eyes with fabric from your stash. (Stash = A BIG unused pile of new fabric). You just have learned your first quilting term!!!
Carole LeRoy (I'm Carole) had the same experience with a painting class. The class was advertised as Watercolor for Beginners. I took one week of my precious vacation and $600, to go up north and learn. After the first day I knew that these attendees were NOT beginners. They were so far ahead of me and with the large class I just got lost. During the next day I just gave up, with tears running down my face I packed my bags and headed south $600 poorer, not knowing a thing about watercolor. After hearing the same stories from would-be quilters, I decided to offer a venue to prevent this from happening to the REAL beginning quilters. You will never be lost, overwhelmed, embarrassed or the dumbest one in my class. That is not how I work my quilting magic. We go from simple to complex, not leaving anyone in the wake. Intermediates need NOT APPLY.
I own and operated The Quilt N Be Bed & Breakfast in Appleton Wisconsin and have offered weekend retreats for seasoned quilters for five years. They come and do their own thing. I have been quilting for fifty years and have learned quilting before there were even books on the subject. I'm offering a full week (sleep over) and classes for the REAL BEGINNER. My Quilting Be is loaded with quilts, on beds and walls. I have a collection of vintage hats that students usually wear for a group picture. There is fun stuff everywhere. A patron once described that my B&B "was a feast for the eyes". Another participant said "your house just makes me smile". I welcome all beginners to come, learn, enjoy and you WILL leave with a finished project.
